Platinum is a special metal with unique properties, and a sister metal to Gold and Silver. Unlike Gold or Silver, Platinum's history of being used as money is limited to a short period of Russian Rubles. Platinum was discovered much later than Silver and Gold, not until 1557, and not in abundance until 1750, when the Spaniards colonized the northern regions of South America. Platinum bullion coins are struck from the most prestigious mints in the world. Platinum Eagles are produced by the U.S. Mint, Platinum Maple Leafs by Canada's Royal Canadian Mint, and Platinum Koalas by Australia's Perth Mint. However, the supply of Platinum is very limited and is difficult to obtain.

Only 120-130 tons of platinum reach the western world markets each year. Approximately 10 tons of raw ore must be mined to produce one pure ounce of platinum. Approximately 90% of all platinum supplies come from South Africa and the former Soviet Republics. Platinum is used in production of one of every five consumer products. Platinum is necessary to the future of a pollution-free world. All the platinum ever mined throughout history would fill a cube less than 25 feet on each side.

Platinum Canadian Maple Leaf

Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Bullion coins were readily available and accepted when interest in platinum coins heated up in the late 1990s. As platinum rose quite dramatically in price, investor interest in Platinum Maple Leaf bullion coins dropped as fast. Today, finding current year Platinum Maple Leaf bullion coins is difficult, despite that such coins are one of the three major platinum bullion coins. This is a legal tender coin on Canada where 5% of the world's supply of platinum comes from Royal Canadian Mint.

Platinum American Eagle

The American Eagle Platinum coin is popular with investors and collectors alike who find the coin's beauty and the purity guarantee of the U.S. Mint irresistible. The obverse depicts the head of America's symbol of freedom, the Statue of Liberty and the reverse shows an American Eagle soaring high above the earth. These are legal tender coins with their "face" value imprinted in U.S. Dollars. The one-ounce platinum coin displays the highest face value ($100) ever to appear on a U.S. coin. The American Eagle platinum is unique in that it is the only platinum bullion coin whose weight, content, and purity is backed by the United States Government.
